The minimum UKRI PhD stipend is £16,062 for 2022/23. Although PhDs are training and do not legally require minimum wage, a comparison is worthwhile: National minimum wage (age 21-23) is £19,094 (40h/week). After tax that's £16,836. Living wage is £19,760 (£17,280 after tax).

A new method for thiocyanation of arenes, reported by SutherlandGroup using iron catalysis. Besides fast reactions and wide scope, the method can be used in combination with other iron-catalyzed reactions for dual functionalization of arene building blocks. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…

As weeks go, this last one has been quite a big one - on Wednesday I submitted my PhD thesis, yesterday I ran my first marathon (3:01:12) and tomorrow I’m moving to York to start a postdoc in the Unsworth group! Hopefully I’ve stopped hobbling by the time I start…
