Another extraordinary Evidence Summer Workshop in the books! Great ideas, great conversation, great people. Thanks to Ed Cheng for lead organizing and @JuliaSimonKerr and Alex Nunn for co-organizing. #ESW

I was so happy to return to Vanderbilt Law last month and see how much the Evidence Summer Workshop has grown from the first gathering. I am pumped to work on this new project! Thanks to Ed Cheng, Maggie Wittlin, @JuliaSimonKerr, Alex Nunn for being great hosts.

Casually following yesterday's Stephen Sondheim auction at Doyle Auctioneers & Appraisers was a delight. It became very clear very quickly I wasn't going to be able to buy anything, but it's fun to see people with too much money and just the right amount of nerdy enthusiasm:

The one thing I'll note about the immunity case is that J Alito, joined by CJ Roberts, wrote about the importance and power of limiting instructions just 10 days ago. Today, limiting instructions are good enough for individual defendants but not for protecting the Presidency.

Crossword people: Yesterday a friend pointed out that if you start with the word MAXIMAL and take off letters from the end, one at a time, it remains a word at each step, all the way down to 2 letters (MAXIMA, MAXIM, MAXI, MAX, MA). What's the longest word that this is true for?

This is a huge loss, and I regret not getting to know Fred personally while I had the chance. I sure know his work, though. For one, I've admired and relied heavily on his excellent article "On the Supposed Jury-Dependence of Evidence Law," available here: scholarship.law.upenn.edu/cgi/viewconten…

I've posted my short article, "Evidence of Compliance," written for the Clifford Symposium. It asks, should evidence of compliance with regulatory safety standards be admissible to show absence of a design defect? I could still tweak, so comments welcome! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

Me thinking about anti-voter-fraud efforts: “Stop trying to fix things that almost never happen!” Me thinking about career choices: “I will write scholarship about how to improve fact-finding at trial!”

New York’s hottest club is the Camp Canine Upper West Side Dog Costume Contest. This place has everything: very small giraffes, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, glamorous celebrity judges, Olympic pommel horse medalist Stephen Nedoroscik…

Does anyone have insight on why the NYC Bar Association rated several sitting judges "Not Approved"? One is on my ballot, and although he's running unopposed, I would decline to vote for him if there's a problem. But I'm not going to abstain if there's no reason for the rating.
