Thank you Maia Szalavitz for clearest analysis I have seen on recent trend of declining overdose deaths Relieved to see teen misuse of prescription opioids down nearly 75% since 2013 There is still a lot of hard work ahead to break the grip of this crisis nytimes.com/2024/12/02/opi…

Not Everyone Is Benefiting From Drops in Overdose Deaths. Drug overdose deaths are finally declining. But it’s going to take work to keep this trend going. Maia Szalavitz nytimes.com/2024/12/02/opi…

Whatever the reason for the decrease in deaths, some groups are still not benefiting. Understanding why may clue us into how we can save them. Maia Szalavitz nytimes.com/2024/12/02/opi…

The reason for the national-level decline in opioid overdose deaths is not clear, as Maia Szalavitz reports. But those deaths are still rising in population subgroups including racial minorities. nytimes.com/2024/12/02/opi…

yeah, that article made no sense. how can you have an opioid use disorder without misusing opioids? if you aren't misusing them, aren't compulsive, aren't having negative consequences & they relieve pain for you, in what world is that a "disorder"?

There's not one way to treat people with substance use disorders. Addiction medications can be life saving. So can psych meds for those who need them. Maia Szalavitz wrtes about Kennedy's dangerous approach. "nytimes.com/2024/12/22/opi…

This might be the most tone-deaf post I've seen in a while. Stanford, patients lost access to analgesics, so some began drinking alcohol to survive. I've met patients that measure out shots of alcohol to *dose* themselves so they can sleep a little. Treat pain appropriately

For various stories, I'm looking to talk to people who work in harm reduction in Nevada and people who smoked occasionally but then vaped frequently. Bonus if you do both ;-) please email [email protected] & please repost, thanks!!!

Why does treatment which is basically forced labor & "encounter groups" that we've known is harmful since the 1970s still being paid for by governments & insurers? Bc despite claims otherwise, we don't treat addiction as a medical disorder.
