Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. I am spending it in Syria with some of the 600,000 people who have returned from neighbouring countries after 14 years of conflict. Syria today is where returning Syrians — given security, opportunities and support — can finally stop being refugees.

On #WorldRefugeeDay, thank you Filippo Grandi for your leadership, and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency for your incredible dedication and service to the communities we serve. History shows we have all been refugees, and suggests we will be again. Let’s respond with greater empathy and generosity.

Thankful to Office of the Director-General, UNON and colleagues across U.N. agencies who gathered with us on #WorldRefugeeDay to stand in solidarity with the over 5 million refugees in this region & the generous communities who continue to host them.

Our Regional Director Mamadou Dian Balde arrived in #Sudan🇸🇩 today for his mission (13–20 July). In Port Sudan, he met senior officials & visited displaced families as 12M+people are uprooted by war. The call is urgent: Sudan needs global solidarity & attention now more than ever.

المدير الإقليمي لمفوضية اللاجئين، مامادو ديان بالدي (Mamadou Dian Balde)، وصل إلى #السودان🇸🇩 اليوم لبدء مهمته (13–20 يوليو). في بورتسودان، التقى كبار المسؤولين وزار عائلات نازحة وسط نزوح 12M+ بسبب الحرب. الرسالة واضحة: السودان بحاجة إلى تضامن واهتمام عالمي عاجل أكثر من أي وقت مضى.

Heartbreaking to see the immense destruction in #Khartoum today, a city that has generously welcomed thousands of refugees. Huge work ahead to rebuild but authorities & partners are doing their very best to support. Our commitment to stay & support as much as we can stands.
