📣Check it out ➡️ Misha Ahrens, Marc Duque Ramírez & Alex Chen were interviewed by NPR’s Jon Hamilton about their new research using discouraged zebrafish to understand how ketamine works in the brain. npr.org/2025/01/03/nx-…

Why socialize when you can spend all afternoon anesthetized on your own couch. What could possibly go wrong with injectable ketamine delivered to your door.

A rare carnivorous caterpillar, previously unknown to biologists, stalks spiderwebs for food whilst dressed in the remains of its prey, researchers report in Science. This unique new species, dubbed the “bone collector,” is found only on a single mountainside on the Hawai’ian

Interestingly, work by Marc Duque Ramírez, Eric Hsu, and I has shown that the fast-acting antidepressant ketamine blunts astroglial responsiveness to norepinephrine (cell.com/neuron/fulltex…). It would be interesting to see if lateral habenula astrocytes are affected in similar ways!

Honored and excited to present my work at the Rising Stars in Neuroscience Symposium! Grateful to Eric J. Nestler, MD, PhD, Friedman Brain Institute and U of Utah Department of Neurobiology for this opportunity — can’t wait to share what I’ve been working on!

Finally, stay tuned for other part of my thesis work, covering all of the other non-astrocyte cells in the brain, called neurons! Fish connectome dropping hopefully before GTA VI

Check out Alex Chen's thesis work, along with the other astrocyte papers in this Science Magazine issue! From flies to fish to mice - air, water and earth, the science is fire 🔥🧯

Do we need to rethink near-death experiences? What’s really happening in the brain? NDEs might be a hardwired coping strategy: the dissociation, calmness, and detachment when facing death may actually be an evolutionarily protective response. For decades, people have asked me:

🐟 New research led by the Ahrens Lab reveals how astrocytes trigger a biochemical circuit that regulates neuronal activity in zebrafish, causing the fish to stop swimming when they aren’t getting anywhere – a behavior critical for survival. ➡️ janelia.org/news/on-the-si…
