The new MHW bulletin is off now 🗞️ Last week, in the south Tropical Atlantic Ocean, marine heatwaves increased in intensity from strong to locally extreme levels along the Brazilian coast at the Equator. Read more 👉 mercator-ocean.eu/en/mhw-bulleti…

MHW forecasts in Tasmania assist with management/conservation of Red Handfish. Only <100 left in the wild so ~25 taken into captivity to avoid worst impacts of extreme sea temps #MHWs #marineheatwaves abc.net.au/news/2024-01-3…

Species respond to MHWs in different ways. Building on the basic MHW metrics, a new study develops a hazard index for fisheries and aquaculture - one step towards a marine heatwave risk index. #marineheatwaves #MHWs link.springer.com/article/10.100…

So much heat kicking about the mid/northeast Atlantic Ocean already, with large marine heatwave developing along W Africa and W Europe. Overall average temp in N Atlantic highest on record for this time of year. #marineheatwaves #MHWs

The State of the Global Climate report for 2023 is now out (wmo.int) which shows that the global ocean experienced an average daily MHW coverage of 32%, well above the previous record of 23% recorded in 2016. #marineheatwaves #MHWs

Our new study published today in Nature Communications examined links between marine heatwaves (MHWs) and the health of foundation species (corals, kelps, seagrass) across the global coastal ocean rdcu.be/dKHfN (1/n)

Most of the Med is currently in a MHW state, with large areas of strong/severe MHW intensity. Given the time of year (ie high baseline temps), this may have significant impacts on marine life, as has been shown for previous summertime MHWs in the region. #marineheatwaves

🚨🚨 in our new study in Functional Ecology we show that pre-exposure to realistic marine heatwaves can influence CTmax values in critical foundation species, but responses vary hugely between taxa. Implications for predicting resilience to extreme temps: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Extensive MHW still persists across most of Mediterranean, being particularly intense in southeast with max temps >31 deg C and max intensity of >3 deg C. Will likely be stressful to marine life, esp after above-average temps for most of summer. #marineheatwaves #MHWs

Several regions continue to experience persistent MHW activity. Most notably: (i) The Caribbean, where absolute temps are ~31deg C and (ii) off Japan, which has been in a near-permanent MHW state for ~2 years. #marineheatwaves #MHWs #climatechange

Detailed demographic studies of marine foundation species are needed, esp at species range edges, to understand responses to warming and other changes. In our new ms we quantified popn structure of Laminaria ochroleuca at leading range edge in SW UK. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…
