Still recommended! Kolbert's book first introduced me to 18th-century natural history, inspiring my PhD dissertation. Alongside history, the book's also a grim warning for what's to come.

Stumbled across Aart Klein's amazing photographs of the construction of the Haringvlietdam in 1961. An imposing modernist project, part of the 'Deltawerken'—meant to protect the Netherlands from storm surges. They bring to mind Michael Heizer's concrete landscape art.

From August, I'll be a postdoc at the IISG. I'll start a research project on the anti-nuclear movements of the 70s and 80s. From early modern earth histories, I'll turn to more recent histories of environments, mining and energy politics. Excited to begin!
