Made chicken barley exactly to the recipe. Ended up with runny soup after an hour. Puzzled. Could it be that different pearl barleys have different absorption capabilities? Mine was bog standard from Sainsburyβs. Nigella Lawson

Extraordinary and beautiful concert by Angela Hewitt at University of York last night. Not sure how we come to be so lucky to be able to enjoy someone so great. Thank you.

Happy National Children's Day! As we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of UoY York Students in Schools we're proud to recognise the lasting contribution to pupils, schools & nurseries that our volunteers have made in 2023/24. Thank you for being inspiring role models to children across York #NCDUK2024

Sign up to our York Festival of Ideas event on 4th June (1-2pm) where we will be Unpacking Mental Health Challenges in Schools with experts from PSHE Association, The Joseph Trust, @SBMatYork & University of York Psychology Department, chaired by Matt Matravers. Visit: bit.ly/YorkFestofIdeas

Today's Office for National Statistics (ONS) stats show the devastating impacts of extreme poverty and deprivation on children's life chances. The mortality rate for infants living in the most deprived areas in England was almost 3x higher than in the least deprived. β This is not okay.

Later today Iβll be chairing this session on mental health challenges in schools. A vitally important subject and part of the 30 year celebration of York Students in Schools (a fabulous volunteering scheme pioneered at University of York) York Festival of Ideas

If you buy books and need reminding that not everything is terrible, I thoroughly recommend Fox Lane Books π¦ Lovely people, lovely wrapping, and a bookmark. Always makes me smile.
