My annual reminder that basketball has a Scottish history. James Naismith’s mum was from Glasgow and his dad was born in Lanarkshire. Naismith visited Glasgow as a boy and saw himself as Scottish, walking around McGill campus in a kilt, and liked to quote Burns.

Here’s the Scottish Labour leader, Anas Sarwar, standing with the WASPI campaign last year. Presumably he now supports them against his party’s UK government?

Despite the tendency to make the story excessively about the author - a common flaw of much contemporary popular non-fiction - this was a wonderful read.

I’ve started 2025 out well, this is a miraculous book. Found in one of the best bookshops, Leakey’s in Inverness, it appears to be out of print in English. If you ever see it in a bookshop, buy it.
