My newest brief on the big risks (but also some opportunities!) for Europe’s automotive sector and how it reflects the broader challenges in Europe’s economic strategy and relationship with China. And of course, I think all of this matters for the U.S. as well!

My favorite chart from my new brief: 🇨🇳ICE vehicle exports to the EU are growing rapidly. The idea that "if we don't buy EVs all will go back to normal" is a fallacy. Competition is everywhere. EU industry can't escape the need to innovate and compete. csis.org/analysis/drivi…

The US tariff exclusions announced on April 11 have reduced the risk of imports collapsing for some of the largest categories of imports from China that the US relies upon. Most non-excluded but China-reliant goods are consumer goods. The big exception is lithium-ion batteries.

Only 15% of China-made batteries are exported, and only 25% of those go to the US. The worry for China's cleantech sector is not so much the US tariffs but rather the possible global recession. from CEIC Data (and my latest piece) and Ilaria Mazzocco

The US-China trade war has quickly morphed into a supply chain war. China put export controls on critical minerals. Now the US is hitting back with export controls on jet engine tech and semiconductor design software.

We knew China's rush to install solar and wind was going to be wild but WOW😮. The solar panels & wind turbines installed in May alone, in a single month, will generarate as much electricity as: -Poland -Sweden -Norway -the UAE -North Carolina&Maryland or -Washington&Wyoming
