DAY 17: #100daysofwalking. It appears to be as difficult to spot a person with a genetic predisposition to cancer called Lynch Syndrome. If you have Colon Cancer - Are you MSS or MSI-H? “What’s that?” ...Knowing could affect your treatment Medics....We can’t do this on our own

Well done to the management and staff at Beaumont Hospital on this achievement. It is a really big deal. It takes many teams of people with a clear shared objective to deliver on a project like this. I am sure other publicly funded hospital groups will get there in the end.

40-50% of pts in Ireland have access to EMA-approved drugs meaning the incentive for pharma to apply for reimbursement in a slower public system is ⬇️ For Ireland to have a two-tier system for cancer treatment in 2025 is unacceptable | Irish Independent independent.ie/opinion/editor…

michaeltmccarthy This is what true advocacy looks like , THANK YOU for not only treating patients but also fighting for them when their voices aren’t always heard. Your voice together with us the patients will make a difference for future patients in Ireland 🤞🏻

Apart from the issues of infrastructure and staffing capacity, this is pretty much the most difficult issue to address in Irish healthcare at the moment. I’ve thought about this issue for many years, and there is no easy right answer. Ireland spent ~€140m on anti-cancer drugs

michaeltmccarthy There are many equally pressing issues in Irish healthcare and it’s good to look outside one’s own specialty..ED access, bed capacity, doctor and nurse retention, protected elective surgery hubs, child and adolescent mental health resources, obesity/alcohol addiction, integration

Thank you The Irish Times for highlighting this. Unfortunately Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD has completely missed the point describing reactive replacement of ancient machines. Can we not be proactive and ensure this does not happen again? UCAN IRELAND irishtimes.com/health/2025/10…

"In Ireland, too often, resource allocation in public healthcare is crisis-oriented." Agree 100% Michael. What are we paying the Minister and top management for? Is planning for the future part of their remit?

Listening to the budget announcements during the day (details awaited), and from listening to Jennifer Carroll MacNeill TD publicly expressed opinions, I think there is a real chance that two key cancer issues might be solved for a generation within the next 12 months: 1. Public ambulatory
