This is absolutely hilarious. Oh wait. You meant it seriously??? To be clear, the law is both unconstitutional and incoherent, does not respect the rule of law, and simply makes Alberta a laughing stock. Sincerely, Professor and "National Lawyer" (I try cases everywhere).

I think that the Wagner Court of 2022 may be the least friendly to Charter rights of any Supreme Court of Canada in the post-1982 Charter era — at least in the criminal context. 1/

Applications are open for the Ottawa Police Services Board - defence lawyers are excluded from applying. You can be a lawyer who represents police, or prosecutes criminal offences, or advocates for increased police power - just not a lawyer who holds police accountable.

This is not just an Ottawa problem, it is a provincial legislative restriction on membership; Police Services Act, s. 27(13) - yet another way the system protects the police from transparency and accountability.

“Canada has dramatically increased its use of pretrial detention, with a 400-per-cent rise in the number of prisoners in remand since the late 1970s. But we are almost certainly not safer. Instead, we are filling our detention centres with more and more non-violent offenders….”

The outrage over #PaulBernardo 's transfer is quite odd and coming from what appears to be a place of significant misunderstanding as to what medium security institutions are as well as the security classification process in general. A thread to help shed some light on both(1/10)

Wonderful decision from the Ontario Court of Appeal today, reinstating Justice of the Peace Julie Lauzon of Ottawa, who courageously wrote publicly about flaws in Ottawa's bail system and whose comments were later borne out by Supreme Court of Canada in Antic and Zora. coadecisions.ontariocourts.ca/coa/coa/en/ite…

John Hale (@johnhalecrimlaw) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Great thread. The outrage over Paul Bernardo being reclassified to medium security is misplaced. His punishment is a lifelong loss of liberty. If he is compliant, manageable and low risk in the institution, it is unnecessary for him to be in a maximum security setting.
