Excited to announce that MANIAC is now out in mSystems! journals.asm.org/eprint/ISRAZYS… Major take-home messages: 1) MANIAC can reliably estimate ANI ~70%, 2) dsDNA phages exhibit ANI gap around 80%, 3) taxonomic assignment in temperate phages is tricky. Give MANIAC a spin and enjoy!

White smoke, we have not only a new pope, but also 16 new anti-phage systems in integrons ! In collaboration with the Didier Mazel lab, we show in our new paper that cassettes of these large platforms encode known anti-phage defenses and uncovered 16 new ones. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Overlooked & mislabeled 'parasites,' commensal protists are vital gut microbiome members! 🦠 Small in cell count, huge in biomass. They impact host immunity, gut ecology & disease. Check this great review by Elias Gerrick & Michael Howitt! cell.com/trends/microbi…

We have a nice postdoc position open. The working place is flexible and can be at University Hamburg, but also at IGB. It is in the frame of our DFG graduate school BiCEst which is a nice option for synthesizing lots of data. stellen.uni-hamburg.de/jobposting/eb5…
