Episode 6 of the #KnowledgeMatters Podcast is a culmination of the information shared throughout the series and Natalie Wexler nails it🎯: When we use practices grounded in cognitive science, TEACHING AND LEARNING are easier in ANY subject! Listen here: tinyurl.com/ynnhd8jd

It’s good to have high expectations for students. It’s great to raise the bar.  But here's the thing:  those high expectations are actually counterproductive if we do not simultaneously support, encourage, and empower our students to rise to the challenge.

We often assume students will learn by doing - that learning IS activity. But learning is a change in long-term memory, not just being busy. Direct instruction makes those changes happen by checking for understanding and systematically removing scaffolds: I do, we do, you do.

Most schools rely on leveled reading. A new book by Tim Shanahan shows there's no good evidence to support that approach. What can teachers do instead? The book offers good ideas but omits something key: build kids' knowledge. More in my latest post: nataliewexler.substack.com/p/debunking-th…

We need for doctors to know their stuff, but it’s also really nice when they have a good “bedside manner.” The same is true in the classroom. Teachers need expertise… but it’s also great when they have a way with kids. I guarantee you it makes a difference to the students.

Leadership is not about having power over others, and it isn’t about telling people what to do. Being a leader means caring about the people you’re leading and focusing on their success more than your own. #edchat

Principals and district leaders must build their knowledge in the Science of Reading and Learning! The schools where real change is taking place ALWAYS have a principal and district leader with deep knowledge. You can’t lead what you haven’t learned! wallacefoundation.org/report/how-pri…
