Ms Schleiger says not many people know that Victoria Legal Aid can help with discrimination because their cases are quiet - usually settled before any public hearing, and often with confidentiality clauses. #DisabilityRC

Most of the penalties to employers that lose a discrimination case are compensation for lost earnings. Given the well-known wage gaps, Ms Schleiger talks about how awful it is that it's essentially cheaper to discriminate against some people than others. #DisabilityRC

As we explained to the #DisabilityRC, there should be better education and stronger powers to ensure employers don't discriminate against workers. As Melanie Schleiger said: 'Discrimination laws are much more effective if there is the threat of penalties or sanctions.'

I’m a living breathing human being who had to fight tooth and nail to make it through the past 10 months. In the wake of the findings of the Jenkins Review and the innumerable stories of abuse in Parliament House - to call this issue ‘neutralised’ is beyond insulting.

The delaying tactics used by our client's former employer were "outrageous", but she's still glad she took legal action against them: "Someone needs to speak up for these things because it just shouldn't happen," she said. Victoria Legal Aid abc.net.au/news/2021-12-3…

Everyone deserves to be safe at work and free from sexual harassment, but our current system is failing us. We call on the Australian Government to implement all remaining recommendations of the Respect@Work report in full and without further delay.

One in 3 Australians have been sexually harassed at work in the past 5 years. This behaviour is pervasive, but it IS preventable. In 2020, Australian Human Rights Commission set out 55 sensible recommendations, it's time to implement them all #power2prevent canberratimes.com.au/story/7663588/…

What will it take for the government to make meaningful change to stop sexual harassment? It damages lives, costs employers over a billion $$ each year and we know how to prevent it #power2prevent Women's Agenda Women's Legal ACT @womenslegalnsw Michelle O'Neill Kate Jenkins

Surreal. Most devastating xxm opening yet. Roberts-Smith’s 2nd key witness admits just now that hours ago he liked online post. It used vile/violent terms to refer to our barrister. He’s also liked posts labelling our war crimes witnesses rats. This after arrest of 1st RS witness

🧵When I told my story of sexual abuse in politics in 2019, no political leaders acknowledged it. I was erased and gaslit as a woman of colour. I complained at the time I was abused (2014-15), in 2018, 2019, and 2021. I fought for years to be seen today. crikey.com.au/2022/06/09/dom…

This would ensure that people who are harmed can access justice and achieve fair outcomes. Read the joint statement from the #Power2Prevent Coalition in response to the Attorney-General’s consultation about the costs model for sexual harassment claims.  legalaid.vic.gov.au/time-equal-acc…

#Power2Prevent and Victoria Legal Aid have been working hard to change how costs are awarded in sexual harassment/discrimination cases. It's heartbreaking when people can't progress strong claims because of the financial risks. An equal access costs model would make a big difference

The Australian Human Rights Commission must be resourced to visibly enforce the positive duty to prevent sexual harassment: theage.com.au/national/we-ha…
