House Martins and Swifts back in the village. Goldfinches, Linnets and sparrows eating dandelion heads on the lawn. 3 Cranes heading up the valley. Proper spring day from the garden, absolutely lovely.

Hard to imagine now, but the Achill Island fishery had taken >12,000 sharks in 29 years before closing in '75 (tho' fishery had crashed from c1960). This info helped make the case for the UK's proposal (bit.ly/4bd9IYs) to incl. basking shark in CITES App II in 2000 1/3

Amazing night watching the aurora in the garden when a Spotted Crake started to sing on Bank Island at 1am. First for me in LDV NNR this spring. York Birding

A privilege to have a patch where Spotted Crake is annual, with 4 calling from 10pm at Wheldrake Ings tonight (audible from path between pool & Swantail hide), with another at Bank Island #PWC2024 (News released with permission of LDV NNR) York Birding UK RBBP Patchwork Challenge

This Spotted Crake was singing constantly on Bank Island for at least 90 minutes last night. Easily audible from my garden 0.3 miles away, although we did walk down to get a better recording. Jack Ashton-Booth

Over a decade since hearing my first LDV NNR Spotted Crake, I finally saw one of the three singing birds on Bank Island last night. Transmitter attached to understand how they use the area and how long they stay for after the first few days of intense singing. York Birding

In case you were thinking of voting Conservative or Reform. This is just the 'start price' for a visit to A&E in Guernsey, where they use the 'American model' of healthcare' that both Tories and Farage are proposing. More here: gov.gg/EDCHARGES

Just a plea to all my UK followers: Please vote tomorrow. The Tories are doing their best to convince you not to bother, but that is just their sneaky tactic.

Bird flu killed hundreds of birds on the DorsetWildlife Trust Lagoon last year, mostly Black-headed Gull, Sandwich Tern & Common Tern. Both tern species are Poole Harbour SPA feature species & are vital to the harbours protection. ‘Releasing’ bird flu back into the environment is crazy!

The North York Moors today - fire after fire as they set grouse moors alight, as if the climate crisis simply doesn’t exist.
