On a day when the D.C. Council will cast a final vote on a controversial, consequential, and complicated public safety bill, don’t ever forget that less than two weeks ago WAMU 88.5 leadership decide to lay off jenny gathright, a phenomenal criminal justice reporter.

The kicker to this Washingtonian 🌸 joint about the destruction of DCist & confusion of WAMU 88.5 pretty much sums up what it was like working there for the last year washingtonian.com/2024/04/19/why…

Don’t usually do *this* but, thread: Monday, SCOTUS debates the criminalization of homelessness. That means many folks are sounding off on the topic. I’ve spent 4 yrs covering this for The Washington Post, and need to reality-check assumptions getting thrown around this week (1/x)

Washingtonian is hosting a Women in Journalism party tonight honoring Kara Swisher Meridith McGraw @carolleonnig Rachel Scott. NOT invited: The women journalists who work at Washingtonian. But we’re here anyway fighting for fair pay and parental leave!

“In 2020, San Francisco Mayor London Breed texted the police chief to clear specific people in her line of sight. ‘Man sleeping on bench on Hayes st near gough,’ one text declared. ‘Can someone come ASAP. I’m in the area having lunch.’” newrepublic.com/article/181036…

ProPublica distributed notecards to homeless people in Albuquerque and asked them about objects they had lost when their encampments were hauled away. Here's what they said. propublica.org/article/albuqu… Nicole Santa Cruz

🧵 When DCist was shut down, we watched as so many of you mourned the loss of a vital local news source. A team of us got to thinking: What if we could create an outlet controlled by us (the journalists) and you (our community)? No executives involved.

Sam Razjooyan is one of DC’s most notorious slumlords. I think about this Morgan Baskin story all the time about how he leaves tenants living in “abject squalor,” eliminates rent controlled housing, racks up unpaid fines, and exploits DC’s housing vouchers: dcist.com/story/23/03/20…

Devastated to report after only two weeks of coding classes in grad school that it's one of the most single useful skills a journalist can have for data analysis. I'm reeling. I wish I'd done this 10 years ago. If you're a reporter, run don't walk to dataquest and learn R.

It just hit me: there are *TWO* reporters left at WAMU 88.5, a station that covers a metropolitan area of 6 million people. That’s one-tenth the size the newsroom was two years ago, and the smallest it has been in two decades.
