Interesting read on the re-glamorisation of smoking bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… We recently estimated that 350 UK young adults start smoking every day academic.oup.com/ntr/advance-ar… Is this being driven by celebs and influencers being pictured - and sometimes actively promoting - smoking?

People usually think replication attempts in science are rare. Journals don't publish replications, so scientists don't do them. In reality there are countless replication attempts (and failures), it's just PhD students assume they did something wrong journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

I don’t why the media are reporting that the NHS is to start offering a “new” or “game changer” stop smoking pill. Varenicline was first available in the UK in 2006. I have prescribed it many times previously. All that has happened is that is has been re-introduced in the UK.

How did this article make it to publication from BBC News (UK)? GPs are entitled to attend mandatory training. It’s part of their job description. Medicine is an ever changing field, so sessions like these are essential for CPD. This is standard practice across the public sector.

In light of recent events I’ve been looking at the number of major floods on local rivers over the last 30 years. It’s quite an eye opener. The last 5 years has seen around three times more than the preceding 6 five years. May even be time for a couple more!

The Smoking Toolkit Study suggests non-daily smoking has increased since 2020. Over this period, estimates of smoking prevalence have diverged from official Annual Population Survey (APS) estimates. Take home: APS may be underestimating true smoking prevalence in England.

A new Cochrane review of interventions for quitting vaping has been published today. There is low-certainty evidence that varenicline may help people to stop vaping. Text-messaging based interventions may also help youth/young adults to quit. cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.10…
