Let's get rid of Recommendation Letters. I'm grateful to everyone who wrote one for me (I assume >100 have been written). It makes sense early in careers, before you have a long C.V, but later, when your achievements are measurable, it just says if you stepped on toes or not(1/3)

Folks at @Matlab should really consider removing the "shading interp" command - it corrupts students and leads them into temptation.

A high h-index implies that you work in a densely populated field with a lot of folks all working on the same thing and citing each other. This is therefore an index of how replaceable you are as a scientist. Discuss.

We have a postdoc position in my group! Goal is to answer simple Qs: What is the minimum energy required to erase an optical bit in finite time? And does quantum modify that bound? It's a collaboration with Chris Jarzynski at UMD. RTs appreciated : ) amolf.nl/jobs/postdoc-s…

Can we please make it a rule that a reviewer who says that a paper is not novel, but fails to provide even a single reference to any (whatever!) paper, should be automatically discarded by the editor?

Tomorrow (May 11 at 11:00 ET) I will give a webinar (hosted by the Photonics Detection and Photonics Metamaterials groups @ Optica) on metamaterial-based image processing. I will provide a tutorial/overview of the field, and discuss our recent results. optica.org/en-us/events/w…

remembered how a prof included a figure in a preprint (top, 2019) that is a near exact copy of a figure i published (bottom, 2015), but didn't think we should be cited cause "it wasn't really relevant" and "these are general ideas". both now published in the same journal. :)

If we continue on this path of madness in twenty years there will be no more academia. We will be all judged guilty of having fostered directly or indirectly this type of (increasing) toxic culture.
