Was lucky enough to hear this talk from Dr Braunwald in Cairo several years ago. Was unlucky enough to have to be the speaker immediately following him. Outstanding individual, scientist and humanitarian.

The mitral valve has to withstand the highest pressure anywhere in the body but also has to open with extremely little force. The AV withstands only diastolic pressure and opens with the aid of systolic pressure. The mitral valve is an extraordinary achievement of nature!
