Trump tariffs and mass deportation, taken together, would be the largest adverse supply shock ever inflicted on the American economy. They would in all likelihood generate a combination of inflation and depression America has never before seen. Our macroeconomic troubles... 1/

I don't disagree with the spirit of this thread but Milgram almost certainly misreported his findings. As with the Stanford Prison Experiment, the canonical version of the story is misleading at best, fraudulent at worst.

Real net worth per capita of the bottom 50% was flat from 1989 to 2019, but since then it's grown an average of 13% per year. Overall it's grown an average of 1.8% per year over the past 35 years. fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgrap…

Hopefully last words on capital gains taxes. The platonic ideal in standard tax theory is: 1. Do not tax the normal return to capital, instead tax consumption. 2. IF you're taxing capital gains, better to tax a broader base & lower rate with more neutrality, so tax accruals.

The discussions of unrealized capital gains for the very rich (ie those with wealth exceeding $100M) are often missing a key fact - two thirds of unrealized gains at the very top is from gains in private businesses (From SCF data eml.berkeley.edu/~yagan/Capital…) Jason Furman Marginal Revolution

Some misinformation in today's US presidential debate about who bears the cost of tariffs. So let's talk about how tariffs affect what you pay for a suit. 🧵

I heard something the other day that stuck with me—every year there’s a draft for human capital and America has the first 100K picks and every year we trade them away for nothing.

hey here’s a guy bragging about getting paid to incite a pogrom against innocent Haitian immigrants. now, I can’t properly post what I think should be done to someone like that.

Academic job market candidates: Did you know you can "make your own post-doc" by applying for external research funding? Many/most departments would be happy to provide office space to someone who brings their own funds. Arnold Ventures currently has multiple open RFPs. Apply

About 9 years ago my son was born. On our first day home and his third day of life he spiked a high fever and we rushed him back to the hospital. After days of waiting for tests (including a spinal tap) we learned that he had bacterial meningitis.

Everything about these tariffs was stupid, and everyone who defended it is economically illiterate, an opportunist or a moron (and often all of these). Even if this episode ends soon, the damage to US institutions and credibility is permanent and it's costly

Trump is basically asserting that he has the power to arrest and deport anyone -- even a U.S. citizen -- and immediately send them to a foreign prison where the U.S. court system can never touch them again. That is the power of a dictator. noahpinion.blog/p/the-authorit…
