53 years ago #OTD. John Young and Charlie Duke completed the final EVA of Apollo 16. They were covered in dust, having spent 20 hours on the lunar surface. With the help of the lunar rover they travelled over 16 miles. Duke left a photograph of his family in the lunar soil.

May 17 1997: In a very different political era, STS-84 docked with the Russian MIR station. It was Eileen Collin's 2nd mission as shuttle pilot. Our image shows a celebration meal aboard MIR. Against any NASA-like regulation, the Russians had a bottle of brandy in reserve.

Jackie Cochran was a trail-blazing female aviator. Among many achievements, on May 18 1953 Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier in a Sabre jet. She would become a sponsor of the Mercury 13 group, to prove women could be fully capable astronauts. [đź“· USAF, 1947]

#OTD in 1969 Gene Cernan and Tom Stafford flew the Apollo 10 Lunar Module mere miles above the lunar surface. 'Snoopy' went nuts, entering a spin that could have seen the spacecraft hitting the Moon at 3,000mph. Stafford took manual control and stopped the spin 8 seconds later.

May 22, 1997 28 years ago, Eileen Collins departed the MIR space station as pilot of STS-84. She'd be home in two days. "The Sun was rising over the Atlantic Ocean. It was totally clear. We could see all the way down to Florida, where my family was waiting for me."

#OTD in 1966, Gene Cernan attempted the second spacewalk in #NASA history - exactly one year after the first. Lacking tools that helped astronauts on later missions, the EVA proved a significant challenge for Cernan: "I knew I was driving the doctors bananas down there."

60 years ago today, NASA launched Gemini 4, and Ed White conducted the first American spacewalk, inspiring a generation. Ed White and Jim McDivitt would orbit the Earth for a total of 97 hours - more than every prior crewed NASA mission combined.

60 years ago today, Ed White did the first American Spacewalk, looking cooler than a chilled martini in Antartica in a classic white space suit. Here's a painting of that spacewalk presented to him personally by artist Robert McCall.
