I often feel children will gravitate toward what they know (eg my lo loved peppa pig, so started there, I encouraged wider reading, whilst sat, interested). I always try to share as many visually very stunning picture books that use colour in engaging ways.

What a great response from the children. Hope they remember that for a long time.

I painted the big double page spreads for Rainbow Flamingo to scale so all the sheets of paper are huge! The opening spread and the dance scene I painted 3 times each before I got them right. #primaryschoolbookclub

The hardest part of illustrating Rainbow Flamingo was getting the pink flamingos to stand out from one another. Spread 1 I wanted to feel like endless flamingos but I didn’t want it to end up being a big pink blob with eyes 😂 #primaryschoolbookclub

I also love muted, contrasting colours, particularly that convey emotion. Colour is an important a communication tool, particularly if the listeners don’t fully understand the language or words used.

My favourite scene to illustrate was Adele dancing across the stage. I wanted her body to feel quite elastic and animated. And the onlookers to be looking on in awe so kids knew that it was okay for Adele - she was safe to be seen 🎉 #primaryschoolbookclub

The trickiest was the kitchen scene when Adele’s mum isn’t listening to her. Drawing flamingos from the front is not something I’d recommend 😅 #primaryschoolbookclub

So good to hear! I don’t often think about this too much, which sounds odd, but I try and illustrate using colours that I think suit the story, rather than thinking about the reader so this is fascinating to hear.
