Simple solutions can have huge impact. Providing kids a hot, nutritious meal at school fights hunger in South Sudan, but it does more: attendance increases and academic performance improves. World Vision South Sudan partners w/ World Food Programme to reach more than 200k students in 21 schools every day!

Thank you to 🇨🇦 Amb. Joanne Minns and her team at @CanadainSouthSudan in Juba for the opportunity to meet with Mesfin and me about World Vision Canada programs, including partnerships supported by Development Canada, World Vision South Sudan and partners—especially community participants.

When girls stay in school in contexts like South Sudan, they learn and live better—and gender equality improves. Educated women are healthier, have fewer children, marry later, are more likely to participate in the labour market, and their kids are healthier! #Educateagirl

Visiting a women-friendly space in Wedweil refugee settlement in South Sudan, I heard firsthand from these forthright and confident women who shared openly their challenges as refugees from Sudan. So many suffered violence and loss yet are fiercely committed to building a future.

In the refugee camp, I met Ibrahim and family, who told of the harrowing escape from Khartoum and trek to South Sudan. They had only clothes on their back and whatever provided by UNHCR World Vision South Sudan & partners. He had no idea how they'd build a life and provide for his kids.

Such warm welcomes and exuberant celebrations as we met communities in FEED2 areas! We learned of community “vision journeys” as the program finishes. The best speeches were the ones that said, “World Vision—thank you, but we don’t need you anymore!” #Sustainability World Vision South Sudan

Over my career at World Vision, I have been inspired by so many remarkable leaders around the globe. What a privilege to be with our World Vision East Africa East Africa Regional Leader, @Lilian_Dodzo, last week in South Sudan.

A flagship program of World Vision South Sudan, supported by Development Canada, is FEED II—which builds livelihoods and food security in local communities. One element is small savings groups, which helped Nyanut set up her microbusiness selling tea in the market. #teatime

In South Sudan, churches and faith groups are integral to the community. Pastors and church leaders are key partners in building compassionate, stable and caring communities through action, prayer and service. I am glad to continue to pray for their ministries, even from Canada.

Even in the vast expanse of the growing Wedweil refugee settlement in South Sudan, we saw people coming together, friendships built, and families helping each other. I can’t imagine the challenges these mothers and children will face in the coming months.

Miriam, World Vision South Sudan staff in Wedweil refugee settlement, walked with me through the camp. She shared her commitment to humanitarian work, her faith and how she wants to build her own country even as they welcome refugees feeling violence in Sudan. I treasured that conversation.

As I've returned from South Sudan, it’s clear that its people face a long road ahead. I met resilient and brave families committed to doing all they can to build their children’s futures. So grateful to World Vision South Sudan’s team for their faith and commitment to our mission. #partners
