Clubs and networks in economics: Authors with connections to editors via same PhD program, work or co-author networks more often avoid desk rejection. Referee decisions are influenced by PhD/employment matches and signalling. Greater connectivity papers receive fewer citations.

Terence Tao says today's AIs pass the eye test -- but fail miserably on the smell test. They generate proofs that look flawless. But the mistakes are subtle, and strangely inhuman. “There's a metaphorical mathematical smell.. it's not clear how to get AI to duplicate that.”

I have tried hard to be skeptical of Cattaneo et al.’s new rd2d package, but I have concluded that it is good. This is a great way to do causal inference in spatial RDDs. It makes it a lot harder to claim causation when using them.

This is important. It suggests: A) Very limited external validity to applied, empirical economics papers B) Much lower return to the investments we make in standard error calculations, and perhaps point estimates (I’m not making a statement about internal validity.)

Excited to be presenting this paper today at NBER (9:30am ET; live video). Writing this paper over the last few years was a crazy ride.... it's also a different kind of paper, more on this soon! (My coauthor pictured with Leon Walras!)

Nice paper and a theme of SI Urban so far: people don't like density, will pay to get away from it. Graph shows home price changes as you cross the line into a neighborhood with a higher minimum lot size. 1/
