The Committee of Five—Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston—drafted the Declaration of Independence on June 11, revised and edited it, then presented a final draft to Congress on June 28, 1776. It was formally approved on July 4th.

A Thomas Jefferson's manuscript "Declaration of Independence" NY Public Library. The Library’s copy is one of four copies that have survived. It was acquired in 1896, when trustee John S. Kennedy donated it. The document is now held in the Library’s renowned Manuscripts & Archives Division.
