From 2nd April to 29th May - No green peach aphid detected at any of our monitoring sites. Plenty of other species caught around Northam and Esperance, and cabbage aphid moving out of dual-purpose canola around Kendenup. No TuYV detected yet. UPDATE - TuYV detected in cabbage aphid at 5 sites on the south-coast. Without GPA the risk is still low but virus is present. Dual-purpose or volunteer canola, and wild radish are likely sources. Keep an eye out for GPA in young spring canola DPIRD Broadacre - WA Grains & Livestock GRDC West GRDC
Registrations have opened for DPIRD Broadacre - WA Grains & Livestock's popular Pest & Disease ID Course to be held in Perth 20-22 August. See todays PestFactsWA for more 🔬 Supported by GRDC🌱Geoff Thomas
Happy to be back at West Coast Microbiome this year, even happier to see Asad Prodhan presenting his work on improving bacterial genome assembly by re-basecalling with improved algorithms. Some really useful stuff and great result :)
It’s canola selfie season! 🌼 To those in Perth, the best way to get your pics is with permission from the grower or at farms offering tickets for private canola photo sessions 🤩 DPIRD Broadacre - WA Grains & Livestock GRDC West The UWA Institute of Agriculture
Sequencing of a #cassava leaf with mosaic-like symptoms found in a garden in Darwin identified Sri Lankan cassava mosaic virus (#SLCMV) as the causative agent. First record of SLCMV in #Australia by DAFF team (ACT), Monica Kehoe Asad Prodhan. Vala et al. APDN (2024) 19:23
What a great idea! We used MALDI-TOF for rapid ID of soil & plant microbes before screening for PGP traits. Some samples work well, others no hits & need Sanger seq. For plant path diagnostics this approach of Asad Prodhan is smart, build accurate DB + quick screening 👏
Soybean dwarf virus causes a leaf reddening disease in sub-clover. In the south-west of WA we have the YP strain which is transmitted primarily by the pea aphid and also green peach aphid. For when you have many sanger sequences that need analysing - check out sangerFlow! Developed by Asad Prodhan for solving a problem in our own lab, we hope it will be useful for others too.
