Work with those involved in your improvement. Don’t try to write your aim in a sentence straight away. Start by making notes answering each part of SMART. These questions can help. Remember not to include solutions in your aim, describe what will be different as a result.

Remember a SMART aim articulates what we are trying to accomplish. Here are some top tips for writing your aim. Your SMART aim answers question 1 of the model for improvement. We will tackle question 2 tomorrow: how will you know that a change is an improvement?

How will you be able to show others Nottingham University Hospitals that your change is an improvement? Develop some measures. How do you do this? A driver diagram is a visual strategy for tackling a complex problem. Meet with your key stakeholders & start with your SMART aim.

Using your aim, brainstorm ideas: “to achieve our aim, the things we need to ensure are...”. Pull these together to see if there are any common themes, which are your drivers. These are usually to increase or decrease something to achieve your aim.

Next identify what needs to happen to enable your drivers. These are more specific & will be your change ideas. Use your driver diagram to identify your outcome, process & balancing measures. These will evidence that the changes are an improvement.

Cause & effect (fishbone) diagram This tool helps you to determine why a particular problem is occurring. A common error is to solve a symptom of the problem, not the root cause. Knowing the root cause helps us generate improvements that will be most effective.

Process mapping This gives an opportunity to fully understand our current state. When mapping we look at reality, avoid assumptions, identify problems & generate ideas collaboratively. This provides a visual representation of the process that can be circulated to engage others.

Creative thinking Often to solve a problem we need to think differently. Problems cannot be solved at the level of thinking that produced them. Creative thinking is a process that enables us to view situations from beyond our own perspective to generate new ideas for improvement
