Today, we observe Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865, when Texas received news that over 250,000 enslaved African Americans were freed, following President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation over 2 years earlier. Juneteenth is recognized as a state and federal holiday.
