Incredible to think how 2 consultant surgeons at a little DGH Croydon Health Services NHS Trust started a research programme >20 years that launched the careers of so many surgeons. Best years of my life.

A new study has found that increasing the sensitivity of the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) can help identify more cases of #bowelcancer in younger people when they visit their GP with symptoms. Find out more about the research: bit.ly/3dXEQiH Nigel D'Souza Muti Abulafi

Early onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in younger patients <50 is a very very difficult problem. We worked with Kevin Monahan and Lisa Wilde from Bowel Cancer UK to see whether FIT could help avoid delayed diagnosis. The results were interesting... bit.ly/3i7iOvd 🧵

In data published in Colorectal Disease from the NICE FIT Study Team study led by Muti Abulafi RMPartnersNHS: 1103 younger (<50) patients had “high risk” 🚩 bowel symptoms. But cancer was the cause of symptoms in only 1.5% of these patients. 51.3% had normal colonoscopies. 3/

A survey with Nigel D'Souza of @ACPGBI members in 4 home nations show 95% of regions (69% after pandemic) use FIT in high risk symptoms in some form. Interesting that 41% think FIT increased investigations! 40% want national guidance (🤞coming out soon) doi.org/10.1111/codi.1…

Staying with FIT, but in symptomatic (not screening) patients. New research from Muti Abulafi's research unit Croydon Health Services NHS Trust. FIT is safe in high & low risk patients: a meta-analysis in The Lancet Reg Health-Europe that informed @ACPGBI and BSG guidelines. thelancet.com/journals/lanep…

FIT implentation in primary care. FIT can be implemented in general practice de novo to triage patients with high risk symptoms, with good uptake. This can be done! Published in Colorectal Disease onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

Poor customer service virginatlantic Richard Branson. My flight on 8 May to attend ASCRS_1 in San Diego was changed to a layover 4.45 instead of 2h. Told if I want to change back-must pay extra. How can this be right to anyone let alone goldmember-TL Georgina refused to talk!
