Most of us will be forced to give up flying, driving, eating meat & dairy (& everything else!) when society collapses - likely within decades, very possible within years. But if enough of us CHOOSE to give up these things NOW we might just build a future where our kids survive.

Tough love from a climate scientist: "Many of you are freaking out about climate deniers, who are a small but vocal group. Meanwhile, I’M freaking out about YOU: the concerned but passive majority. Stopping climate heating depends on YOU getting active." wecanfixit.substack.com/p/tough-love-f…

This sugar maple seems to have read the textbook on autumn senescence. If anthocyanins are there to shield leaves from excess light during senescence, it would make sense that they are expressed first and most strongly where light intensity is highest.

Today ⁦Plant Functional Ecology Lab⁩ visited Compensation CO2 Québec and discussed how drones and AI could help to improve the monitoring of afforestation projects for CO2 sequestration.

A position in a great lab and a chance to play around with unbelievably cool phenology dataset! Want to know more about being a postdoc in the lab? Feel free to reach out to me—I'm glad to share my experience!

Of all SBL UdeM tree species we study, white pine is the easiest to automatically detect with AI and drone imagery. For that species, performance is close human vision. Pink are model predictions and outlines are ground truth. Data by Myriam Cloutier and our team.

Glad to have this paper out! We build and validated models to predict 20+ leaf functional traits from reflectance spectra in temperate plants. The models are available—please get in touch if you want help/advice about using them!

🚨 Postdoc position alert! We are looking for a postdoc fellow to study how environments affect plant reproductive strategies. 🏙️ ➡️ 🌸🌼🌻 It is a Université de Montréal position in collaboration with the #MontrealBotanicalGarden (Espace pour la vie) and IRBV. DM for more info.

Great article on remote sensing terms and how to make them more inclusive. They also highlight the excellent research done by women in remote sensing in a She Maps Special Issues in the journals Drone and Remote Sensing 🛰⭐️

In this new study from our lab, Myriam Cloutier shows that segmentation of temperate trees from drone imagery works best at the onset of autumn when leaves start of deciduous trees start to change color. authors.elsevier.com/c/1jMU27qzT3EBA
