Fire and Ice: An image taken yesterday shows lava flowing down Mauna Loa while snow covers parts of Mauna Kea.

On Tuesday 1,100 gallons of toxic firefighting foam (AFFF) leaked from the Navy’s Red Hill facility. AFFF contains PFAS, a forever chemical that can cause cancer. These pictures show cleanup efforts at the site of the leak, directly above O'ahu’s primary source of drinking water.

The way we approach problems is a product of our backgrounds, mindsets, and available resources. Imagine what Hawaiʻi would look like if our solutions were kanaka- and ʻāina- generated with access to the resources that entrepreneurship can provide.

Students need space: to learn, to fail, and to be themselves. Empowering our haumana to identify and solve problems starts with creating safe spaces where they can fail without fear.
