Oh hey, finally some good news about scientific publishing! The file-drawer problem in the social sciences seems to be decreasing over time (in the figure, "Persevered" are those whose proposals were rejected by TESS) pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

College admissions generally have a bias that they can take people with mediocre skills but strong personal qualities and help them, but can't improve those with mediocre pers. qualities but excellent skills. Both types of improvement are unlikely, but this asymmetry is a bias.

In case people are salivating over the idiotic tariff formula for research papers, Jake Jares and I took advantage of another simplistic formula for the 2018 farm bailout: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Really excited to share that I'll be joining UC Berkeley in the fall to begin my PhD in political science! Looking forward to this move across the Bay and the start of a new chapter.

What academic/media/PMC members of the left often don't realize is that tech center-left has immense respect for Elon Musk. I think this is an opportunity to rebuild the Obama coalition. nytimes.com/2022/11/13/opi…

A classic chicken/egg debate. Are men illiterate because no one writes book for them, or does no one write books for them because they are illiterate? Crazy that there used to be books written explicitly for men both low art (Clancy, Chrichton) and high art (Pynchon, Ellis).

Can somebody explain to me why wokism is so fixated on the falsehood that slavery is good for economic growth? Isn't it actually a pretty awesome finding from economic history that slavery is bad for the economy?

For the record, you need to treat all these results like "Americans think 40% of people are transgender!" with a grain of salt. This is just survey response / innumeracy where all answers are biased toward 50% (don't know): pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight." - Andrew Shepherd, "The American President" (screenplay: Aaron Sorkin)

Here's the history. David Swensen (Yale) was the outlier and the greatest endowment manager of all time. Everyone copied Swensen. Consulting firms sprung up by people who worked for Swensen, who then advised and joined other endowments.

This quote from Roberts actually comes from Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, not Shelby.

The American public overwhelmingly rejects political violence. The more we misrepresent that fact, the more we risk emboldening the very few who do not.

Can someone explain why the journalists misquoted Kirk when his actual quotation is extremely horrible as well? Sort of reminds me of the Charlottesville "fine people on both sides" misquote, even though the real quote was really bad as well. Seems to help the far right.

I think it's sort of crazy that two former hosts of "The Man Show" will go down in the history books as key figures in explaining the politics of the 2020s.

Derek Thompson Why is it so hard to say "you know, that was a really bad, illiberal idea? Biden shouldn't have done that" and leave it at that. Because people doing stuff like that is the only potential way we get out of this mess.

We have measured support for partisan murder for the last 3 years. Following Kirk's assassination support dropped to ~*1%* from around 3% in the weeks before. True for Democrats, Republicans and even MAGA Republicans. Americans reject political violence.
