when reporters talk about the pandemic like it's over it sounds like they're saying "back when climate change was still here..." or "back when poverty was still a problem..."

the one and only test of your values is how you treat the people you have power over. that's your family, your employees, your interns, businesses you frequent, staff at restaurants you eat at. anyone who you have the power to disrupt the lives of. there isn't a second metric.

if you say something beautiful while treating people badly, it doesn't necessarily counteract the value of what you say, but you don't earn any good person points for saying it.

L'shana tova! My hope for the new year is we realize activism in the arts looks like refusing to tolerate and excuse exploitative, abusive, and bullying behavior in our community, not just filling our works with empty platitudes and vague gestures towards social issues.

If we want the arts to be seen as a fountain from which empathy flows, we must first learn to practice it.

It's nice to create art that has a message, but if a single person was harmed emotionally or physically in its creation, then the intended message is drowned out by the real message the work puts out into the world, which is "bullying is good, actually."
