A quick 🧵 on market competition and the cost of applying to residency… For years, the Association of American Medical Colleges had a near-monopoly on the residency application software market. And every year, they raised the fees on ERAS. Just a little. Every single year.

Naturally, this was presented as part of their “unwavering commitment to addressing serious challenges in the transition” to residency. But if you think they did this for any reason other than fear of losing business to a competitor… I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

There are lots of monopolies in the medical education space - and often any talk of competition is met with a lot of hand-wringing and feigned concern about how the organization is soooo important and valuable that any competition could only harm learners. Don’t believe it.
