In my research, I try to read what the characters in the story wrote and read. It's important to slip into the time period and try to understood the world as they experienced it. But, the archivist in me cringes at attempted "conservation" of the books and records.

Sometimes you know something but never had a need to articulate. Heard recently on a podcast, that when your sources all start saying the same thing, your research is done. I feel that.

Honored to spend a little time with Zach the MFer last week. You couldn't talk to a more down to earth, authentic person. He shares his world with everyone simply so they can learn how a small group of smart, passionate people feed the world.

I think the greatest skill set I've developed is being deliberately naive. It allows me to say yes when signs point to no because it's too hard or too much of an unknown. It permits me to focus on process and learning and to enjoy the ride!

How fun is it to start the day signing books? Been a minute since I signed one of these for a reader, though. My first book, Lincoln's Wrath, the Civil War story of censored editor John Hodgson, was published in 2005.

Thank you to the ⁦savoyautomuseum⁩ for hosting me Saturday. Check out their newest exhibit, Harvest to Highway, featuring car companies that crossed over to tractors.

Museums should reflect all of our stories, and be places we all feel welcome. They should also challenge us. And yes, they should even make us uncomfortable. There is great power in learning.

I'm incredibly excited to be joining the panel to share a sneak peak of the new Ken Burns documentary The American Revolution. Visit WQPT PBS for date and times.

I was a freshman in high school when The Civil War by Ken Burns first aired on PBS. I had never seen anything like it. I taped paper to the front of the tv to prevent my family from changing the channel so I could live record each episode on VHS. Then I wore those tapes out!
