Jeff Lukas with then-unraced WINNING COLORS, Saratoga 1987 On August 18, she would break her maiden in her first start. The Wayne Lukas' trainee would become one of Wayne's four Kentucky Derby winners. This note (I was told it's Wayne's writing) was in his Saratoga office.

One morning at Oaklawn, no one was training in an absolute deluge. Alicia Hughes & I made our way to the Lukas barn & found he had configured his shedrow to jog & canter horses inside. He grinned & said “Welcome to Lukas Downs! We never give up!” Doesn’t that just sum up so much?

Multiple graded stakes-winning WAYS AND MEANS (Practical Joke - Strong Incentive, by Warrior's Reward) worked yesterday at Saratoga. The 4-year-old Chad Brown trainee, who most recently won the G2 Bed o' Roses at SAR June 6, was timed in 50.22 for 4F.
