What makes a perfect soil pit?? Keiron Derek Brown is not bad at them - as found out on Chilterns National Landscape #farmercluster earthworm surveys. Abundance vs diversity 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ Opening up new world of subterranean citizen science with a few hail storms, frozen fields and lots laughs too 👍👏🪱🪱

The world is still turning - pair of Curlew back on their usual field at Shabbington on my BTO Wetland Bird Survey River Thame CT earlier. 6 more upstream @ Ickford & 2 downstream at Waterstock - bang on their average arrival dates with a few more still to come in next few days 🎉🎉

Bird ringing demo a highlight of Chiltern Rangers Chilterns National Landscape #NewShoots programme & this morning didn’t disappoint. Great birds, great discussion on value of ringing, great insight into reed-beds & perfect conditions. Thanks Tring Ringing Group & Buckinghamshire Council for your support

Been great start to 2025 WCBS as part of Chilterns National Landscape #trackingtheimpact project. Weather just held for today’s survey - 13 spp incl. Dingy Skipper, Green Hairstreak, Small Blue & Brimstone. Couldn’t be more different to this time last year 👍

Some gorgeous weather yesterday came hand in hand with some very birdy conditions, with an array of scarcities scattered across the isle. Thursday’s elusive Subalpine Warbler was also trapped and ringed, and deemed to be a Western. Read more at fairislebirdobs.co.uk/latest_sightin… 📸 C Hill

The past couple of days have bought in some good birds, and some particularly nice catches in the mist nets. I was very pleased to ring a lovely female Western Subalpine Warbler yesterday afternoon! Other highlights were a trio of Crossbill and my first bluethroat in the hand!

Not many words to adequately sum up today! A spring male Pallas’s Reed Bunting was the perfect reminder of what a magic place Fair Isle is, and of the brilliant people I get to share these birds with. 5th for Britain 3rd(!) for Fair Isle Bird Observatory

It takes something special for me to tweet these days but Alex Penn produced some magic Fair Isle Bird Observatory today with this stunning Pallas’s Reed Bunting around Wirvie. What a stunning bird, no one deserves this find more than Alex ! 🍻

Yesterday was a day of increasing rarity with a Nightjar trapped in the early afternoon, followed by a Blyth’s Reed Warbler in the evening, and to top it all off, a SCOPS OWL caught in Gully at 21:00! Catch more of our latest sightings here: fairislebirdobs.co.uk/latest_sightin… 📸 A Penn

This Great Reed Warbler was found in the obs garden this afternoon, and though it has shown itself only a couple of times since, it’s given some very nice views out of the bar windows for a small group of observers! A very nice bird, and so much bigger than I thought they’d be!

When a Chilterns National Landscape #farmercluster member sends a video over asking what bird is this & it turns out to be a Montagu’s Harrier it’s a bit rude to not share in their excitement (& pride) … what an amazing bird 🎉🎉 Love working with knowledgable & enthused farmers …

A trio of gorgeous Dunlin chicks Fair Isle Bird Observatory. Shortly after ringing and releasing the chicks, one of the adults came over and brooded them just a few metres away!

Perfect conditions on my Chilterns National Landscape #trackingtheimpact WCBS survey earlier. 23 species (483 indivs 👍) incl. 21 Chalk-hill blue, 12 Adonis blue & 7 Small blue. Great views of some feeding (including this Silver-washed fritillary) while others flying frantically …
