There’s a (not so) silent war being waged against biomedical research and the scientific community is losing. Not because it lacks power, but because we haven’t fully stepped into it. Here’s what every researcher needs to understand at this turning point we find ourselves at:

This is what I know to be true: this Administration is systematically dismantling the infrastructure that funds lifesaving research. But I believe they are betting on one thing: that scientists will stay quiet.

Dr. Catharine Young (@catgyoung) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Why? Because biomedical researchers have never had to operate in a political arena. They work through peer review, panels, and grants. Systems built on trust and merit. But those systems are now being intentionally broken.

Here’s what I have realized over time: Research holds enormous untapped political power. The public cares deeply about cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and rare conditions. But the messages of what is happening have not been adequately translated to them yet.

Dr. Catharine Young (@catgyoung) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Scientists are trained not to overpromise. We are careful and data-driven. But here is a certainty: If this effort succeeds, many future cures will not exist. We will fail the American people and those around the world who count on us.

Dr. Catharine Young (@catgyoung) 's Twitter Profile Photo

But we are not alone. I’ve worked with the advocacy communities for many years. Every disease has a built-in community: patients, families, caregivers, clinicians. They already know how to organize and creat impact.

And so this our moment to reach outside of the scientific community. Scientists must connect with patients, survivors, advocates, for profits - to work together. To allow them to help amplify the urgency. Let them speak plainly but let us work together.

What’s at stake is not just research. It is also the hospitals and medical centers that anchor care across America. It is hope, progress, and trust in the possibility of healing. So here is the call to action: Stop waiting, break the silence, speak clearly and let’s work
