Great discussion at the Ocean Dialogue with Civil Society at #UNOC3. We exchanged views on the #EUOceanPact, incl. the lack of measures to effectively preserve marine protected areas, and on the future of EU's ocean protection efforts. 📷OCEANA/ Franz Mahr

Great news 🎉 Here, at #UNOC3, Portugal has announced that it will extend the marine protected area around the Gorringe seamount, which means 100,000km² of protected waters in the Atlantic, says Vera Coelho. This step brings the country closer to achieving #30x30 protection.

New zoning of Ponent marine reserve (Spain): 🎣Does not include areas of strict protection because fishing will occur in all the reserve 🪸Leaves unprotected an area home to vulnerable ecosystems We support science that recommends to strictly safeguard 1/3 of every protected area

Discarding unwanted fish at sea threatens fish stocks & fishers' livelihoods. A 🆕 report shows that the Landing Obligation, the EU’s key means to tackle this, is not properly enforced. The issue isn’t the #CommonFisheriesPolicy, but the lack of political will to implement it.
