As Israeli forces enter Al Shifa hospital, we call once again for the protection of medical staff, patients and displaced civilians sheltered inside the hospital. We are extremely worried for their lives. #Gaza

Why do doctors work without sleep? Tradition.   In the 1890s, Dr. Halsted created a model for training where residents worked nearly 24/7.   Only later, we learned: Dr. Halsted used cocaine to stay awake & morphine to fall asleep, relying on residents to cover up the addiction.

We have normalized and even sanctified sleep loss in our profession, but doctors are not superhuman. When we take away something as critical to our humanity as sleep, everything erodes: our cognitive function, coordination, mental & physical health, and, sadly, even our empathy.
