On Wednesday, Simon met with the team at Elmley Nature Reserve, to see how we can work together to help the rare bumblebees that call it home. Then he spotted a Shrill Carder and Moss Carder, as well as Burnet moths. They are always looking for more BeeWalkers (hint, hint).

Lovely to see male ruderal bumblebees, Bombus ruderatus, these last few weeks. Here is a fully striped & melanistic example. The full striped from south Kent & the melanistic from Trosley country park- a great find by Alex Hodges. Bumblebee Conservation Trust

These last two days, Nikki has been in south Kent for our Moss Carder #wildflower surveys and running a bumblebee blitz with volunteers. We recorded all the most common 7 bumblebee spp, plus southern cuckoo, ruderal, and brown banded Bumblebee Conservation Trust

Today, Simon had a quick visit to Dryhill Nature Reserve near Sevenoaks, to investigate reports of a large black bee. Seven species were found including the Brown-banded and Red-shanked, two of our rarest! And the Garden bumblebee population did have some darker forms.

Have you seen any of these flowers in your garden? Reducing mowing gives wildflowers a chance to grow naturally, no need for seed packets. Mow less all summer & help feed hungry pollinators.

These last two days, bumblebee & wildflower surveys in north Kent for our Moss Carder project. Moss carder is declining across its European range, so we're going to known locations in Kent, Cornwall & Northumberland to record the habitat they are found in Bumblebee Conservation Trust

Yesterday, Simon met with members of Tenterden Wildlife and Town Council staff to look at options for wildflower and pollinator surveys across their projects. Using the new Pollinators of Kent guide from Kent's Plan Bee, we went through the different groups and did a little quiz

On Sunday, Simon led a public walk at Foreness Point, Margate, for the Thanet Coast Project. We found 5 bumblebee species plus solitary bees, butterflies, moths and orchids. The gardens at Margate station were looking great, particularly the giant Echiums. Next one on 5th July!
