After a decade of work to reform Texas' broken bail system, the House has overwhelmingly passed SJR 5 and SB 9—putting public safety ahead of politics. Thanks to strong bipartisan leadership, this measure will now go to Texas voters in November. Thank you to Chairman Smithee,

An incredible day for the safety of Texans. Texas Public Policy Foundation Right On Crime began working on moving Texas towards a risk-based bail system 10 years ago, and today we are one step closer to putting a stop to high risk, violent offenders getting out on bond to re-victimize our communities.

Excellent article by German Lopez for the The New York Times about a big, important problem in the US: Most crimes aren’t solved. If you murder someone, it’s essentially a coin flip whether you’ll be arrested for it. If you steal a car, you’ll almost certainly get away with it.

Human trafficking survivors need merciful laws for a path to recovery and rehabilitation. For those coerced into criminal activity an affirmative defense provides a chance to explain how their victimization led to their actions. #txlege
