Worth reading this from Jamie Bartlett 🇬🇧 on the broader implications of Meta’s announcement re dropping fact checking. Is this the end of 'content moderation?' open.substack.com/pub/jamiejbart…

University crisis latest, and very bad indeed: Cardiff are proposing to cut 7% of their academics, and to drop a whole array of programmes including ancient history, modern languages and music. Predictable and yet still shocking. 1/4

The AI situation has hit a crisis point at the university where I teach. Students are calling each other out on it in class discussions. They don't want to respond to peer's AI generated work. Guess what's being proposed by the students? Spoken and handwritten assignments.

We’ve just a about got through the Winter and today is the first day of meteorological Spring. It always puts me in mind of this fantastic TMS montage from The Voices of Summer. If you grew up listening to Johnners, Blowers, Arlott and CMJ this is a real treat.

Even by Amazon standards, this is extraordinarily sleazy: starting March 28, each Amazon Echo device will cease processing audio on-device and instead upload all the audio it captures to Amazon's cloud for processing. 1/

Begs the question: if YOU have one of these listening in your home, do you have the moral (if not the legal) responsibility to warn people before they enter? cc: Cory Doctorow NONCONSENSUAL BLUE TICK

Wonkhe...University's are engines for social mobility. David Kernohan says he doesn't understand why we are not proud of this and the positive contribution we make. Every university is committed to making things better. #wonkhe #ucisa25

The claim that AI will ever replace teachers is nonsense, and always will be. Because no AI can manage behaviour in a classroom setting. You can sequence a curriculum precisely, deliver content carefully, but if the student doesn’t want to participate, none of it will happen.

Why superficial, so called "staff engagement" is worse than no engagement at all. This is about "listening sessions" & "engagement workshops" where people put their ideas forward (often on post-it notes) where nothing happens afterwards or "suggestion boxes" that don't get

The House has passed the GOP's budget bill with the 10-year ban on state AI laws intact. If the provision survives reconciliation in the Senate, the California, Colorado, or any other state that sought to pass laws governing AI would be legally banned from doing so. 1/x
