We are currently attending the @wildoceanssa Oceans Stewards Science Sessions today at UKZN!

Day 1's Keynote Speaker is Barney Kgope, the Director of Biodiversity Risk Management for the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & Environment, who spoke to Climate change & Ecosystem-based Adaptations (EbA) as well as South Africa's current national cross - organisational action.

“It is important to formulate an approach that includes Nature based Solutions so to ensure communities are effectively engaged and we are all working towards a common solution.” - Barney Kgope.

Our second speaker for the day was Dr. Alison Towner of The Independent. Dr Alison Towner spoke about the population status of great white sharks, providing background information and unpacking the controversy and science surrounding the species.

Dr Gwen Penny from the Nelson Mandela University presented her research titled Using Species-Specific Behavior Data to Mitigate Bryde’s Whale Entanglements in Coastal Fishing Gear.

Sandile Ntuli from WILDTRUST unpacked the Small-Scale Fisheries and MPAs Project, which aims to enhance the livelihoods of local fishing communities while promoting sustainable fishing practices.
