Are there any other professions outside teaching where you can be doing the job for 25+years, and still be treated like you don’t know how to do it well?

In my (special measures) school today I saw a really good first 15 mins of a maths lesson. Genuinely was nothing obvious needing improvement. And yet a guy from the trust (ex . HMI) still found things to fault. Genuinely wonder if these people live in the real world.

Why is it never ok to watch a lesson and say ‘really good lesson there, keep it going’. But it’s not is it? We’ve got to find some spurious bullshit ‘EBI’. Imagine a world where good teachers could just be reminded that there’re good teachers occasionally? Heaven forbid😅😇

Being overly critical of teachers and micromanaging them, doesn’t improve schools. It just takes away the agency, dignity and enthusiasm of hard working, dedicated professionals. Let’s support and empower teachers, not ‘monitor’ them into submission. Please 🙏

Sciantific Ken MacIver 🇺🇦 I’m sorry that you had your performance review. Must be horrible. How will you recover? It’s called the real world and I am honestly astounded at your perspective. It’s why people are homeschooling in droves. Because teachers are detached from reality.

The old ‘teachers don’t know about the real world’ trope is doing the rounds! 😅 Maybe before regurgitating that lazy nonsense you should find out what it’s really like to be a teacher in 2025, rather than listening to grumpy old uncle Jim with a few pints inside him😂

Starmer entered politics in 2015. He was doing his job 22 years ago and he is now. Always the low hanging fruit with the Tories. No wonder they are nowhere near power. They’re offering nothing.

Screw is turning at work. Big O imminent. Staff going onto support plans. Lesson plans being handed in-and marked! Two separate emails on Friday evening telling me off about minor register errors. More learning walks. Yes we need to raise our game. But there’s a tipping point!

Sharing curriculum resources seems to trending. I think it has some value. But I find I very rarely am able to use resources someone else has produced ‘off the peg’. I need to adapt to my classes/my style. I’m finding AI is where the real time saving is.

In my last school I was tasked with supporting a teacher who was struggling and on a support plan. You know what I discovered? Struggling teachers haven’t forgotten how to teach. What they have lost is confidence. Over time I helped her build that. I’m pleased to say it worked!

Things I’m expected to do in the first 10 mins of a lesson On threshold to greet Check uniform Register done Distribute books Lend equipment to unprepared students Settle the class Do now activity complete and checked And that’s before students get to ask me anything!

SLT: Form tutors are the first point of contact and vital for pastoral issues. FTs: Yes, we see that. Can we use form time for that? SLT: No, you need to check uniform and complete the form activities. Make sure you are doing them, because we’ll be checking.

Had a few people last week talking about how teachers 'are naive to the 'real world'. But also hear a lot of people who have been teachers talk about how much easier their life got after they left the classroom. Surely its one or the other?

Teachers shouldn't be compelled to make phone calls to parents as part of a behaviour policy. Email should be an accepted form of communication. Phone calls can take a considerable time and be stressful. They can be useful, but in my opnion, should be at staff discretion.

School science labs. This has frustrated me for ages. Why can no architect ever design a functional lab?! No we don't want 'pods'. Absolutely stupid idea. The best layout by far is the usual movable desks in the middle of the room, with all the utilities around the outside.
