From a 2015 LRB letter: "My uncle studied at Oxford just before WWI. The president of his college was a very old man raised in Ireland. When a child, a very old Waterloo veteran tended his parents' orchard. My uncle asked him about Waterloo. His reply was: ‘The drums, the drums.’

I was working in the quite exquisite surrounds of Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens today. A real treat. This is somewhere that everyone should visit at least thrice. Such gilt-edged opportunities don’t come along often & so I came prepared with 3 camera/lens combos. Here’s No1. Hope they pass muster

Note the rabbits on the arms of Cardinal Allen. He founded the English College at Douai in 1568, and it was alumni of that college - fleeing the French Revolution - who established Ushaw.
