Pleasure to represent An Oral History of British Nuclear Test Veterans USWResearch at the annual OVA conference. In an event rich with perspectives on the relationship between evidence and policy, my talk considered the archive as a key site in which test veterans generate knowledge about health and citizenship.

So excited to say that I’ve signed a contract with Liverpool University Press for my first book, “The British Nuclear Test Veteran”, which will use oral history narratives to document the history of the ntv community in the UK. 🎉📚

Yesterday we interviewed Terry Hilliard who served as Flight Lieutenant during Operation Grapple. Terry piloted the Primary Sampler plane for the Grapple Z3 test, flying his Canberra into the mushroom cloud shortly after detonation to collect samples for the AWRE.

Squadron Leader Thomas checks the ship’s cat on HMS Koala following Britain’s first nuclear test in 1952. “The cat had a clear reading. I was concerned because he had probably licked himself clean […] however I understand that he lived a long life.”

Greatly saddened to hear of the death of Ken McGinley, the founder of the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association. I had the pleasure of getting to know Ken over the past few months and he was a man of kindess and compassion who will be greatly missed.

Hoping my grandad, who was sent to Christmas Island in 1958 and witnessed five atomic tests, would be proud of me this evening. I never met him, but I do it all for him and his memory. #britainsatomicscandal

Also thinking of Ken McGinley this evening, the man who spearheaded the British test veteran cause and stood at its heart for four decades. He supported thousands of families, including mine, through the loss of their loved ones. A truly great man.
