WATCH: The most amazing thing about this remarkable car commercial, is that it didn’t seem to realize, or didn’t care, how effectively it made the point that cars are a HUGE waste of space in cities. Award-winning 2002 ad for Saturn cars. HT javier

🧵Amidst unprecedented hurricanes, NY Power Authority will unveil the draft of New York's first renewables strategic plan, as mandated by #BuildPublicRenewables Act. Any plan that fails to put us on track for a 100% renewable New York by 2040 must go back to the drawing board.

The US is massively under-spending on disaster preparedness. In the era of climate crisis, it will only get worse. I urge Governor Kathy Hochul to sign the Climate Change Superfund Act to channel $3 billion/yr from Big Oil & Gas to protect NY communities. theatlantic.com/science/archiv…

Climate expert and author Jeff Goodell warns us that we built our world for a climate that no longer exists. He tells me, "The climate that we're in now is entirely different. There's going to be more extreme events and we are not ready.”

Germany could basically eliminate coal from its energy mix today if it restarted mothballed reactors. And apropos of nothing: *cumulative* greenhouse gas emissions drive long-term climate change.

We are in a climate crisis. New York isn't acting like it. By law, we need to build 36 gigawatts of renewables by 2030. The private market plans to only add 7GW. Our state public power utility should build the rest, but CEO Justin Driscoll only plans to add 3.5GW.

A UK judge sentenced 5 climate activists to 21 years in jail for *planning* to block a London road to demand climate action. What should Big Oil CEOs get for this?

The L train started serving Canarsie in 1906. Today, it serves more than 300,000 daily — that's the entire ridership of some subway systems in other cities. The subway makes NYC the global city that it is today. We need #CongestionPricing to ensure that legacy continues.

For a long time, people have been sold a false choice: climate versus jobs. Creating jobs while protecting our climate isn't just possible, it's necessary. And now, it's happening.

No surprise that in just the first month, Congestion Pricing is already a success, delivering results for New York commuters, visitors, and residents: Fewer Cars ✔️ Faster Commutes ✔️ Cleaner Air ✔️ More transit riders ✔️ Safer streets ✔️ crainsnewyork.com/transportation…
