The #Sailbuoy navigates between pre-set locations using satellite positioning. The Sailbuoy tech forms part of BAS’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions while collecting the data we need to research the physics and biology of the Southern Ocean. 📸 Jeremy Robst

Recovered beautifully via lasso & crane out of S Ocean by RV Polarstern and Povl Abrahamsen. Pity Sailbuoy has sail damage from her 2.5 month mission - probably growler collision. Perhaps we can repair and redeploy. Still under discussion… but yummy ADCP data now downloaded 🤓

This afternoon the RRS Sir David Attenborough launched the BAS Sailbuoy, an unmanned long endurance surface vehicle for oceans, equipped with an array of sensors, including echo sounder, and remotely controlled from Cambridge via satellite British Antarctic Survey 🐧

An exciting day yesterday for #QUICCHE with the Gothenburg glider group led by Seb Swart deploying a sailbuoy, wave glider and sea explorer! All were whisked quickly eastward in a dipole eddy jet, so plenty of excitement for the pilots back in Sweden too.

The mad #QUICCHE currents of the Cape Basin are playing with our ocean robots. Crazy dynamics here. Very exciting and wonderful to be at sea with inspirational PIs and students! 🫶🏼Lisa M Beal YuengDjernPole2Pole Isabelle Sindiswa Giddy Johan M. Edholm Estel Font @TeshaToolsee Sea Technology Serv
